Mike Murley, an acclaimed and lyrical saxophonist, stands as one of Canada’s foremost jazz artists. With a career marked by versatility and excellence, Murley has earned a prominent place in the jazz world, evidenced by his contribution to fourteen Juno Award-winning recordings since 1990. Of these, seven were led or co-led by Murley, while the remaining seven saw him as a sideman. His recent accolades include winning Junos for The North (2018), Metalwood’s Twenty (2017), and his trio’s Test of Time (2013).
Murley’s journey in jazz began in 1981 when he relocated to Toronto from his native Nova Scotia. His career since then has been characterized by an impressive range of stylistic explorations. In the realm of mainstream jazz, his recordings with esteemed Canadian musicians such as guitarist Ed Bickert, bandleader Rob McConnell, and trumpeter Guido Basso underscore his mastery of the standard repertoire. On the contemporary front, Murley’s collaborations extend to the next generation of jazz innovators, including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti, reflecting his adaptability and commitment to evolving jazz expressions.
Murley is also a key member of the three-time Juno Award-winning electric jazz group Metalwood, which highlights his prowess in contemporary electric jazz. Beyond his national contributions, Murley has an international footprint, having recorded and performed with notable artists such as saxophonist David Liebman, pianist Renee Rosnes, guitarist John Scofield, vocalist Norma Winstone, and the late jazz legends Paul Bley, guitarist John Abercrombie, and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler.
Mike Murley’s extensive body of work and collaborative spirit have cemented his reputation as a vital and dynamic force in jazz, both in Canada and internationally.
